The newest country in the world was born today. An amazing and emotional day of joy and feast for all: common citizens, foreign journalists, Sudanese (Northern and Southern) political leaders, foreign guests and dignitaries.
Parties began last night in Juba's streets, with thousands of people going around in cars or on foot, with flags, drums, songs. Today was the officialdom day, with the celebrations held at the Mausoleum of John Garang, at the presence of Salva Kiir Mayardit, president of South Sudan, and Omar Hassan al-Bashir, president of Sudan. And dozens of heads of state and government from all other the world.
Tomorrow all the challenges the new nation will have to face will become real, but today there has been room for joy and celebration only. Welcome South Sudan!
